So you want to see a castle…..

Most everyone who goes to Europe, when asked what they want to see or do says “see a castle” or “see a really old building”. Well, good news, you’re in the right place! The other good news, it doesn’t really matter what country you go to, you *can* see a castle.

But let’s try and narrow it down a bit. Do you want to see medieval towns with towers and ramparts? Do you want to see where the royalty of the time lived? Do you want to see fortifications where more common folk lived?

Some of these castles have been turned into hotels, some into museums, some tourist destinations you can tour, some you just photograph. The list goes on. The Fisherman’s Bastion in Budapest we built in the 19th century to provide panoramic views over the Danube and the Pest side of the river.

Hermitage Museum

The Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg Russia is a lovely castle that was converted to a world-renown museum. Built in 1764 to house the art collection of Catherine the Great this one serves double duty as a beautiful palace part of a larger complex of palaces and royal homes as well that now houses the second largest art and culture museum in the world.

Moritzburg Castle

So the good news is, you can absolutely see a castle, tour a castle (like Moritzburg outside of Berlin pictured to the left), stay in a castle – like the many in France that are now hotels, or visit medieval towns for a bit of culture.
